A DMSO Notebook
While learning about DMSO, here are a few facts, figures and sources for you.
This article’s purpose is to cull some helpful points to help you evaluate and possibly use DMSO. Few professionals actively study and teach about DMSO - so here are some useful resources.
SOURCES
Please read previous posts on my X profile, listed at bottom of this thread, AND ‘A Midwestern Doctor’s’ (AMD) outstanding, fact-filled Substack articles. (There is also a Substack link below.) He has reviewed a huge amount of DMSO literature, so you have a wealth of information within his work.
These are just a few of his information points. But do not stop with this article. Review his work yourself. We must be knowledgeable and informed if we are to take good care of ourselves and our family. The typical physician does not know about DMSO.
And, another great source with outstanding information and products you can consider, is Ben at DMSO Direct. He is on X @DMSODirect, and has been gracious and generous helping with information.
Here are posts from @PierreKory reporting @Midwesterndoc’s work on DMSO.
DMSO, Dimethyl Sulfide, is a clear liquid, a solvent that dissolves other compounds and which mixes well with water and some other compounds. Its metabolism does leave a garlic-like taste after DMSO is absorbed into the skin. It is a mild OXIDANT, and was used in medicine from about 1963 when Dr. Stanley Jacob discovered it could penetrate the skin without damaging the skin, so it was used as a topical analgesic, as an anti-inflammatory, and as a carrier of other drugs, ie. transdermal drug delivery such as antifungals, and it was found to penetrate the toenails and fingernails.
Know that everything I say and have gleaned are for your consideration, and never medical advice for you. That is for YOU to evaluate and decide. I am the conveyer of information.
All these uses in humans are “off-label”, not endorsed or approved by the FDA at this time. DMSO has been at the center of much politics in this day of alternative products that may work as well or BETTER than commercial pharmaceuticals. This could cost BigPharma and the Big Medical Industrial Complex a lot of money. DMSO is downplayed whenever possible in these circles of influence.
A 60 Minutes segment about DMSO was hidden for years. Here it is:
REPORTED DMSO USES
Let’s look now at some reported DMSO uses, and some important pointers for you in using it if you choose to do so;
- If you will apply it to your skin, be sure your hands are clean, and that the area where you will apply is clean of any other products, including cosmetic products that you would not want carried into your body.
- AND be sure the product you use is PHARMACEUTICAL GRADE. Absolutely for everything for your or your pet’s body! Wherever you buy your DMSO must be able to tell you their product is pharmaceutical grade.
QUALITY and STORAGE
- There are many sources. As you decide, keep that first and foremost in your mind. Because Ben at DMSO Direct has been helpful AND his great ethics about quality and performance, I like DMSO Direct. Here’s what he taught me about quality and, in particular, the containers in which your DMSO is stored. This is also important knowledge if you transfer it to a different container, or make your own mixes to use.
DMSO should be kept away from light, and well-sealed in its container.
DMSO should be stored in containers made of materials with which the DMSO will not react. Plastics are often used, BUT there are acceptable plastics, Polypropylene is best, and next best are HDPE (high-density polyethylene), and LDPE (low-density polyethylene).
Even the lids/caps ideally should be made of acceptable materials.
These include food or medical grade stainless steel, dark glass (best for long-term storage), although much of the glass is lined with plastic coatings/liners, which should be ‘Polycone’ liners of the PP, HDPE or LDPE.
The liners are the bigger issue, because the wrong liner can absorb DMSO, swell, and cause you to lose your seal.
Most DMSO is produced in China, and we cannot know what their production involved as to containers, barrels, caps, etc. So, use a reputable company for what you purchase, so that your individual storage containers are acceptable.
For 2-year or longer storage, glass is best.
Avoid anything aluminum coming into contact with your DMSO.
If you transfer your DMSO to another container and wish to use a spoon or similar implement, use food grade stainless or wood.
How about “best by” dates? Ben helps here to remind us that those dates are usually about the packaging materials and the seal. He says, “Most companies will only guarantee the product meets their spec for two years if unopened. The DMSO itself is usually fine much longer. The main thing that happens over time is slow breakdown into dimethyl sulfide (DMS), which increases odor and lowers purity slightly. DMS is actually FDA approved as a flavoring ingredient, but in DMSO it just smells funky. In most cases, the product is still completely usable.”
Depending on the other ingredients, in general, he says about 1-3 years is the length of longevity of mixed products.
BUYING your DMSO
- Use a reputable company. Scams abound. Be careful!
On X, one type of scam takes your money and never sends anything, and other type takes your money and sends you a fake product.
Use a reputable company!
NEVER purchase by via email. Always look for an actual website and order there. IF an account asks for your email, don’t give it. Go to their website, then give your email on the website’s ordering page.
eBay - be careful - hard to know much about out the products.
I am going on record here to recommend DMSO Direct, because Ben is not only knowledgeable, but won’t even purchase containers, for example, if their documentation is not written confirmation of what packaging, processes and such. You need this sort of care.
INGREDIENTS
Your DMSO products should have only high quality, HEALTH-SUPPORTING ingredients. For example, castor oil should be organic. Aloe Vera should be pure without preservatives, done for example, with freeze dried aloe powder to avoid the preservatives needed to use whole aloe extract.
The fragrances should be essential oils, not artificial/chemical fragrances which have toxicities.
There should be no suspicious ingredients in your DMSO products.
The ingredients for anything you use in your eyes, for example, should be safe for the eyes, like organic castor oil.
Gel or cream bases can have a lot of variation to ‘thicken’ the product. Arrowroot powder appeals to me - something that is food-grade and non-toxic.
The ingredient list should be complete and transparent so you know what you are using, and can make good choices!
Let’s look now at some of the reported uses, and some important pointers for you in using it if you choose to do so
- When you will apply it to your skin, be sure your hands are clean, and that the area where you will apply is clean of any other products, including cosmetic products that you would not want carried into your body.
- AND be sure the product you use is PHARMACEUTICAL GRADE. Absolutely for everything for your or your pet’s body! Wherever you buy your DMSO must be able to tell you their product is pharmaceutical grade.
HANDCRAFTING
Handcrafted products can be made in small batches for freshness and quality control.
A very fresh batch that hasn’t sat on the shelf is your best bet. (Obviously.)
MAKING YOUR OWN MIXES
- Start with your 99.99% pharmaceutical grade DMSO
You can make your own mixes, for example, if you want to make eye drops for cataracts and vision, there are testimonies out there about good progress with a 30%/70% DMSO/castor oil. Again the castor oil should be organic cold pressed. Take care of your body as you’re trying to heal your body by using only the best and safest ingredients.
Some of Midwestern Doctor’s thoughts about DMSO include his point that DMSO has a very unique affinity for the eyes.
- Floaters - he points out ALL of the testimonies he’s heard from people who were treating their eye floaters with DMSO said it worked. You can mix it as mentioned above, 30/70 with castor oil, or buy the mixture pre-made, and put a drop or two in the eye once or twice a day.
Also, if you create your own mixes or transfer any DMSO products to your own containers, be sure to have acceptable containers. For example, for eye drops, you could use a brown glass bottle with a glass dropper.
– Use acceptable implements, food grade stainless or wooden for transferring. Pouring liquids – no problem.
- You may have seen the story of the 75-year-old blind man. Midwestern Doctor feels the reports he’s seen of nerves that have been ‘dead’ for years if not decades, come back to life after the correct therapy, and recommended Pat McGrady’s book, “Persecuted Drug: The Story of DMSO” (available on amazon) for more information and reports.
Midwestern Doctor also says DMSO is very helpful for other head issues, particularly ear, dental and sinus as well as skin issues throughout the body. He elaborates on these areas and others in his Substack articles.
You can, of course, buy your mixtures from an outstanding source, and start to use them, not needing to mix them yourself.
IN CLOSING
Remember the DMSO approvals from the FDA and or USDA are not necessarily up-to-date with needed information. Most of the approvals for DMSO products currently are for pet use. So, the good DMSO manufacturers stay within the guidelines of the approvals. That’s why you will see on many of their products, “for pet use only.”
Finally, do check out DMSO Direct, and their new premium gel coming out soon. Their goals are to be #1 in the industry for quality and performance. They continually research and improve. (NB. I have no financial agreement with this company whatsoever. I just so appreciate their ethics and their striving to create absolutely the best product line out there. Not too many companies can honestly claim or do that.)
Enjoy A Midwestern Doctor’s articles, and discover what DMSO can do for strokes, brain injuries and spinal cord injuries! And - pain & arthritis, cancer, chronic lung issues, sometimes reported to have saved lungs that needed transplants, macular degeneration.
Note, A Midwestern Doctor also says that the more serious issues with DMSO include buying counterfeit DMSO brands, and some temporary skin irritation.
